The Busyness of Life

I must not often type the word busyness because it looked funny to me and I had to double check in the dictionary that it was spelled correctly. I apologize for the lack of posts recently. I work a full time job and the last few weeks have been spent painting the kitchen and rearranging the bedroom.

I’m very excited to finally have the kitchen painted. Alpha and I live in an older house that was built in the 1920s. It’s a rental so we haven’t done too much to it since it’s not ours. I decided that since I spend so much time in the kitchen, we needed to give the funky old room a bit of a facelift. I unfortunately did not think to take before pictures, so I don’t have before and after shots. I’ll give you a mental picture of what it looked like before. Imagine a kitchen that has been painted over several times, many coats of paint, in recent days who knows when the last time the walls were painted. Then add layers of dirt and cracks to these so called “white” walls, and add to that dingy blue cupboards. Now on the floor we have an old school blue tiled floor that looks like the tile used in elementary schools and no matter how much you scrub it it never looks clean. It was not my ideal kitchen, at all, in any way, shape or form. But when it’s all you have, you work with it.

We didn’t retile the floor, but I got a large grey rug to put over most of the floor and then we painted the walls grey and did the trim white. To me it’s a breath of fresh air and brings a smile to my face when I walk in there. It’s a somewhat small kitchen. But now it has a new face and function and I truly enjoy being in there and creating things more than ever.

We also bought a new mattress and boxspring in the last week. I had been eyeballing the vegan Avocado mattress for some time. I can’t tell you how many reviews I read, and different review sites that I went to before finally purchasing one. These mattresses are handcrafted and do not contain any of the harmful chemicals and petroleum based products that most conventional mattresses contain. There are no pesticides or flame retardants used and it comes with a 100 night trial and a 25 year warranty. I’ve been sleeping on it now for just over a week and it’s been great so far. I don’t wake up with aches and pain like I did with our prior mattress. It was 15 years old and way past its’ prime. I was also very happy to find a green mattress that was made of all vegan materials. I’d like to do a more thorough review of the mattress after 30 days with some more input from myself and Alpha, but so far so good!

So that is what has been going on in the last couple of weeks. We’ll get back to the delicious food next week now that our kitchen is back together and I’m sleeping good and well rested.
